John Travolta is John Gotti and Entourage star Kevin Connolly will direct an upcoming drama about John Gotti

The John Gotti biopic is back on track. Kevin Connolly, from the popular HBO series Entourage, will direct the upcoming biopic on New York Gangster Icon John Gotti. The film, which used to have the Gotti: In The Shadow Of My Father will star John Travolta as the guy who became the head of the Gambino crime family after a steak dinner.

With Kevin Connolly signed on to direct, John Travolta is gearing up to step into the shoes of mob boss John Gotti and he is bringing his wife and daughter along with him.

Six years and two title changes after the project was announced, John Travolta will finally star as the titular Gambino family Mafioso in Gotti. Good Morning America debuted the film’s first trailer on Sept. 26, depicting the allegedly Gotti-ordered hit on his predecessor, Paul Castellano (Donald John Volpenhein), followed by his own demise from The Teflon Don gleaming pompadour, designer suits to a bald, craggy-faced inmate.

Gotti died serving a murder sentence in 2002 at age 61; the cause was throat cancer. One of his sons, John Gotti Jr., helped advise director Kevin Connolly, and even provided Travolta with his father’s jewelry and ties to get into character.

My wife looks like Victoria and my daughter looks like Angel. I says Travolta, holding court in a corner banquette with Connolly. The Entourage actor adds: It is uncanny. I looked at pictures and was thinking this is too perfect. Life is too short not to go to work with your family and friends,

Travolta and his wife and daughter have appeared in only one other film together, the comedy Old Dogs with Robin Williams. The veteran actor says he has stuck with the mobster-based biopic for years because of the quality of the story and is excited about Connolly’s take on the project.

“Kevin presented his take to me, which is the vision I’ve always wanted, and I believe the vision John Jr. wanted,” said Travolta. “It’s a small character study of John Jr. and John Sr. that investigates the realness and grittiness of their repoire and the historical events of the Gotti family.”

Connolly grew up on Long Island. He directed episodes of Entourage as well as the ESPN 30/30 documentary Big Shot about the New York Islanders ripoff and the indie flick Gardener of Eden.

Connolly made his directing debut with the 2007 comedy Gardener of Eden but is also known for directing the short Whatever We Do.

The Entourage star most recently directed episode of ESPN acclaimed doc series 30 for 30. He also just wrapped on his second feature, the period drama Dear Eleanor, which stars Luke Wilson and Jessica Alba

Gotti had a brush with one of the original Rat Pack members. Frank Sinatra inherited the Rat Pack from Humphrey Bogart and the chairman of the board passed on a chance to meet the still-Teflon Don after the crooner Carnegie Hall concert. Sinatra canceled due to illness but was spotted out later that night at the Savoy Grill. In his memoir, Shadow of My Father John Gotti Jr. says his old man almost closed the lid on Old Blue Eyes.

According to Jr., Gotti sent associate Joe Watts to explain to the singer that the next time he ducked him, I will be the last face you will see on this earth.

Gotti was taken down by his under-boss Sammy The Bull Gravano and died in prison of cancer. The cops say Junior became acting boss of the Gambino crime family but he told 60 Minutes he retired after prison.

Gotti Jr. believes that has died due to medical neglect by prison authorities. Since when does a toothache become cancer in modern society?
